It is great to be back in full swing now in Lower School Science. We have been very busy since the first full week of school. It started with the students coming in for a safety lab, going over expectations, and discussing the rules for the science lab. All grades, SK, 2nd, and third visited the lab for this talk. Fourth grade discussed safety in their classrooms,and first grade will start visiting next week.
SK is very busy with their insect unit, including a "bug hunt" on the USM grounds, and observing the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. Second grade is busy with their science/social studies unit looking at ants, and also an interdisciplinary study of why leaves change color in the fall. They are completing a lab called "Hidden Treasure". Third grade is very much involved in their plant unit, and have taken the 2nd grade question (why do leaves change color in the fall)a step further. Using chromatography, they are separating colors in a solution of leaves and isopropyl alcohol. The fourth grade habitat unit is also well underway at this time. The classes have been doing habitat walks and studies on the USM campus, and are beginning to study adaptations.
